According to Answers.com, the legend began when a third-century priest named Valentine continued performing marriage ceremonies even though the Roman emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he was certain that single men were better soldiers. Eventually, Valentine was thrown in jail and he formed a relationship with his jailor’s daughter. Prior to his execution on, you guessed it, February 14th, he signed his last message to his beloved “From your Valentine,” a phrase that is still used on Valentine gifts and cards today.
