How To Care For Your Costume and Fashion Jewelry

02.12.08

You’ve just bought a fabulous piece of costume jewelry or fashion jewelry and you can’t help but wonder how long will it be before it begins to look dull and the CZs loose their sparkle.  Here are a few tips that will keep your costume jewelry looking great (and real).  One of the most important things to remember is DO NOT USE JEWELRY CLEANER.  Most modern day costume, fashion and sterling silver jewelry has a rhodium overlay which keeps it maintenance free.  Jewelry cleaner destroys that overlay and your once gorgeous jewelry becomes dull and tarnished looking.

Remove your jewelry when:

  • Cleaning the house or using harsh chemicals
  • Putting on lotion, perfume, hairspray, shaving cream and other beauty products
  • Doing laundry
  • Swimming in the pool
  • Bathing

To clean your costume/fashion jewelry:

  • Use warm water and mild soap (we prefer Ivory liquid)
  • Rinse
  • Polish with a soft cloth
  • Dry your jewelry before storage.  All jewelry can tarnish if not dried properly and water can leave residual water stains
  • Store jewelry carefully to avoid scratching
  • Do not steam clean

What Is Rhodium Plating?

Many times people will shy away from a piece of costume jewelry or designer inspired jewelry when they find out it is coated with a layer of  rhodium.   Rhodium is actually a shiny, highly reflective, silver metal with a finish like Mercury and is consistently used on white gold to  restore the shine. Sterling silver is actually very soft but the rhodium finish is very strong  and  mimics the brilliant finish of freshly polished silver.  It also protects the piece from natural tarnish.   So, purchasing a piece of jewelry coated with a layer of Rhodium as a finishing touch provides  shine for a longer time plus it prevents scratches and tarnishing.
